AutoBeat is a M4L MIDI device for patterns generation based on probabilities.
With AutoBeat you create variable beats and fills with just a few clicks!

The device is based on eight 16 steps sequencers. For each step you can define the chance to trigger a MIDI note and its velocity. This creates patterns with continuous changes exactly where you want them! You can set, for example, a 4/4 kick, then add another kick hit on the third 8n at 50% chance. This triggers a new kick note just sometimes.

Each voice has exclusive tools for advanced editingtime resolution, three random functions, offset, loop length and more.

Beside the variations automatically generated on the main pattern, you can also create an alternative pattern via the fill area: then just click the fill button to launch another pattern on the fly.

Being a MIDI device, AutoBeat works with any instrument (not only drums). Furthermore, it has special features optimized for Ableton’s Drum Rack! If this device is used in the same track with a Drum Rack, AutoBeat starts communicating with it getting the drum pads name. Then, editing a drum pad in the Drum Rack, AutoBeat automatically selects that note pads displaying its settings: you will always see the pattern of the pad you are working on.

AutoBeat works great as continuous variations live instrument as well as a smart probabilities writing tool: the store feature allows you to instantly create MIDI clips based on the current pattern with just a click.

  • sydrums by HyenaSydrums is a drum rack specially designed for AutoBeat by  Giona Vinti, aka Hyena,electronic music producer and Ableton Live Certified Trainer. All sounds were meticulously crafted on a vintage FM synthesizer, the great Yamaha SY99, then recorded in 24 bit format, with 4 different layers of velocity to recreate the subtle variations generated by velocity in an FM algorithm and give more dynamic fun. The drum rack was then enriched with Ableton Audio Effects carefully mapped to macros to twist and mangle your drum patterns in subtle or extreme ways.

    AutoBeat has amplified my awesome, and let me explain why: I’ve had a vexing list of rhythm programming problems for several years running, and I haven’t found satisfying solutions to most of them until I discovered AutoBeat. The price is right, and that’s no hype: I’m fond intuitive tools with cleanly-laid out user interfaces, and it was as if K-Devices read my mind and implemented most of what I wanted to do in a single device. Max For Live — closest thing next to a built-in Live plugin — is definitely the right way to go. Just as there are several must-haves that justify buying Reaktor (like the Twisted Tools catalog), I’d call AutoBeat a must-have for M4L, a real standout of what the system is capable of. Even if you have no intention of disassembling its virtual insides. ;)

    One of my qualms with AU/VST MIDI plugins is: as well-designed as they may be, there may be track routing and freezing limitations to contend with. In the midst of creative flow, that interferes with my mind’s mode of performing grooves and focusing on instinctual input. Since AutoBeat is M4L, it doesn’t have any of those problems, and sits before any instrument.

    Don’t limit yourself to drums either. Get inspired and paint in hypnotic melodies that go beyond a bog-standard arpeggiator. (Unless I’ve missed something, AutoBeat doesn’t seem to have a built-in way to randomize velocity for further expressiveness, but this is easily solved with Live’s own Velocity MIDI effect.)

    I’m obsessed with rhythmic variations that break strict 1/2/4/8-bar loop copypasta, and was previously exporting drum patterns from other apps (including iPad ones) into Live. Polyrhythms — even subtle ones that play off and sync with each other — can really add unique life and evolution to a track. Having probabilities for drum hits brings and nuances to fuller sequences. Now I have a direct, focused way to work without those intermediaries — I prefer this greatly. In addition, I still find Live 9′s groove pool implementation awkward to work with, and the simple “swing” control here — based on the smallest note division in play — is a real delight. What’s more, “store clip” makes it super-easy to export AutoBeat grooves as MIDI files, where you can then apply groove pool if you so desire. This is a refreshing change from drum machines that I want to take “one step further” but have to use Live’s MIDI record — again, cutting out middle steps so creativity flows better.

    If random variations is unfamiliar to you, I suggest starting with AutoBeat as a conventional step sequencer. Make something you like, then expand from there. It’s rewarding whether you use traditional 707/808/909 hits or something stranger.

    I’m impressed by the Drum Rack integration as well, where the 8 note triggers in AutoBeat automatically show their drum rack names (they’re a bit truncated since they only use one instead of two lines, but still very usable). The pads look similar to Drum Rack, making it a comfortable environment to sequence in, and I’ve found it far more amenable than previous M4L step-sequencers I’ve used — and fun to draw in rhythms! (Indeed, one of the only things that clues me into an effect being M4L instead of native Live is the antialiasing of buttons and the context menu font. But I’m nitpicking.)

    I haven’t explored every feature in-depth, but one must of mine in my electronic music tools — surrendering to chaos — is a well-implemented “random” feature, and AutoBeat has it both on a general and a per-sound level. Clicking the overall “random” is a great “instant inspiration” way to generate “top loops”, just add a bandpass filter and perhaps a touch of bitcrush, and you’ve filled in a nice space between your main kick and snare that sounds more refreshing than most of the high-hat or percussion fillers (ahem) out there.

    One oddity I should point out is that Live’s Undo doesn’t work reliably after drawing in the step sequencer: if you click once, it easily undoes that, but if you drag-and-draw, it seems to need to undo each value incremented through while you sustained the mouse, making it tough to undo “lane wipes”. For example, try clicking and dragging a bar from the bottom to the top, then undo. I expect it to go back to the bottom, but it often doesn’t apparently change on the first undo, and only several undoes after does it start to go back to lower values. Not a big problem if you’ve saved your set recently. I don’t know if this a limitation of M4L or if AutoBeat’s next version can improve on it.

    Lastly, I’d like to commend K-Device’s Simone for his friendly, prompt, and helpful tech support: mindful of the dynamic balance between usability vs. features, I asked him about a 32-step or even 64-step AutoBeat. He mentioned thoughtful considerations and pointed me to using the existing fill feature for even more variations (there’s that word again). Lovely. And in addition to the clear manual, there’s useful help text for most controls you hover over, although sometimes it fails to come up unless I mouse over another control that has help text, and back again.

    So, on account of all above — and from the perspective of a synth addict who’s used 100s of plugins over the years and enjoys celebrating the creators of amazing tools — I have high praise for AutoBeat as a worthy addition to my quasi-minimalist arsenal (staving off Gear Acquisition Syndrome here), and if you can relate to my production needs, I hope you’ll like it too!

      Just a quick note: actually AutoBeat randomizes velocity too. If you select “velocity”, then all random functions (globals, and in the macro) will be affected to velocity parameter ;)

    Really excellent Max device. AutoBeat is really inspirational and enhances the creative process without getting in the way. Fantastic product.

    I also have to comment on the support given by K-devices: I had an issue with my setup (an error on my part) and their support was quick, competent and friendly. Thanks guys!

    I have also gone ahead and bought drumk 2 which is also superb. Looking forward to future products from this team – they get it!
